Energy Valorization Through Biogas Production

Biogas is produced through the decomposition of waste deposited in landfills. Biogas is a mixture of various gases generated by the anaerobic digestion of biodegradable waste.

It is mainly composed of methane and carbon dioxide, with a residual percentage of sulfur compounds and volatile organic compounds. At the Biogas Energy Recovery Plant (CVE), biogas is captured and recovered through a network of troughs, an electrical power installation, suction, and an internal combustion engine that uses the biogas as fuel.

The Valorminho CVE is a compact installation where the engine and compressor are housed within the same unit. It includes a generator with a power output of 537 kW.

In 2023, the electricity generated by Valorminho's CVE (Energy Production Center) and fed into the National Electricity Grid was 3 GWh annually, enough to supply approximately 1300 homes, preventing the emission of approximately 2000 tons of CO2 and reducing the country's energy dependence by about 2200 BOE (barrels of oil equivalent).
